“Boozhoo, I am Anishinaabe and a member of Marten Falls first nation in Ontario. I learned to bead from a talented family friend when I was around eight years old. I began beading regalia for my children and continued practicing and learning in my twenties. I make it a priority to learn traditional skills from other native artists as well as learning styles and techniques from historical artifacts. I enjoy experimenting with designs and techniques that allow me to bring creativity to this historical art form. I mostly create functional beaded art in the forms of moccasins, medicine bags and regalia.”
“My pieces are a series of beaded bags. They all include floral beadwork and material traditionally used including wool, velvet, moose hide and otter fur. I am always growing when I am creating, each time I make something I learn what works well, what I want to change and what new style or method I think may work well on a future project. This series includes my first attempt at a pipe bag, and my second bag which includes improvements and adaptations I learned in the process of making my first. It also includes a puzzle bag and medicine bag, both of which I have made before, and have therefore grown in my techniques and adaptations in these later versions. These additional features include using smaller size beads, adding lining, adding fringe.”
